Greenwich House is a century-old gem hiding in plain sight within reach of everyone in New York City. Designed by Delano & Aldrich, the three buildings have an architectural grandeur from the early 1900s and yet are a contemporary hive of creativity, learning, social services, and community. In November 2022, Greenwich House celebrated its 120th anniversary and can look back over a long and distinguished history of serving the community. Today, the organization is more lively than ever with its well-known Greenwich House Pottery, Greenwich House Music School, summer programs, and social services.

The studios at Greenwich House Pottery – Chelsea are equipped with a handbuilding classroom, a throwing classroom, and a mixed-use studio space, three electric kilns, a slab roller, and an extruder. This studio specializes in mid-range firings, offering two clay bodies and a large selection of cone 6 glazes. We are pleased to offer the Greenwich House Pottery Residency Program, which is designed to support artists’ projects and to increase awareness around the importance of creative engagement with ceramics. Greenwich House also operates four senior centers, a senior health and consultation center providing mental and physical health treatment, a methadone maintenance clinic, chemical dependency program and all-girls non-competitive basketball league. Within Greenwich House Pottery is the Jane Hartsook Gallery.[13] The gallery was named in honor of Jane Hartsook, former Pottery director. Greenwich House arts programming is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. In addition to benefiting artists and students, these improvements will reduce the environmental footprint, making the Pottery a more accessible, energy-efficient, and responsible neighbor. We will make every effort not to close during terms and will give students as much notice as possible. However, the timing of the closure is hard to know for sure at this point because so much is dependent on our fundraising efforts. We have ongoing dialogue with our project manager, architects, and engineers, so when the funds are raised, we will be able to mobilize fairly quickly. We have developed this project to be completed in phases while fundraising is ongoing. The first four phases can be completed in some manner while the building remains operational, but when we begin phase 5, the building will close. Closing the building is necessary so that the work can be carried out safely and expeditiously.

Currently Greenwich House is relaunching a fundraising campaign ($1 to $3 million) for the Pottery. After more than 100 years in operation, they are still working with 16th century tools. The reputation and work emanating from the Pottery is resulting in long waiting lists. Greenwich House is also seeking to expand its music and theater and performing arts spaces, install sound proofing and modernization, and come up with various ways to support aspiring professional artists giving them the time and space to practice their instruments.
