Besides the staff that brought over the food they didn't say excuse me. Almost hit me in the face with the plate as they brought us our food. Five stars go to the nice selection of beers and bottles. I expect to be greeted within the first 60 seconds of sitting at the bar, not glanced at 4 times, and ignored. After I finally got my drink, the service was okay, but it was not good or great. Apps, dinner was so yummy we were all very satisfied w our Experience.

The plant’s electricity would be carried into Los Angeles by a line of steel transmission towers constructed across the Santa Monica Mountains through Calabasas and connected to the DWP’s existing electric grid in the San Fernando Valley. Unlike oil- and coal-powered generating stations, the atomic plant would be pollution-free and would not contribute to the smog that was blanketing Los Angeles almost daily. The Intermountain Generating Station is the central component of Intermountain Power Project (IPP), a $4.5 billion project to supply electricity to Southern California and other markets. The 1950s saw such a rapid growth in the San Fernando Valley that it forced the Department of Water and Power to construct one of the largest steam plants in the country, located in Sun Valley. In total, there are 2700 miles of transmission line cable sending electricity from Hoover Dam to Los Angeles.
Edison’s historic antiques
Edison's new challenge was to develop a better storage battery for use in electric vehicles. Edison very much enjoyed automobiles and owned a number of different types during his life, powered by gasoline, electricity, and steam. Edison thought that electric propulsion was clearly the best method of powering cars, but realized that conventional lead-acid storage batteries were inadequate for the job. It proved to be Edison's most difficult project, taking ten years to develop a practical alkaline battery. By the time Edison introduced his new alkaline battery, the gasoline powered car had so improved that electric vehicles were becoming increasingly less common, being used mainly as delivery vehicles in cities. However, the Edison alkaline battery proved useful for lighting railway cars and signals, maritime buoys, and miners lamps.
Later Years and Inventions
Any movie being made at the time had to go through Edison, making him the king of the movie industry. Edison, over the course of his career, held over 1000 patents in the United States. He was credited with inventing a bevy of technological devices from the incandescent light bulb to the phonograph.

Local business and real estate interests offered generous incentives. Besides, the weather was nicer and there was a wide variety of exotic locales, allowing films to be made year-round in almost any kind of environment. The West Coast became a refuge for filmmakers seeking to escape the oppressive MPPC monopoly. William Selig of Chicago was the first film producer to move to Los Angeles, establishing a studio in Echo Park in 1909. In 1910, the California Motion Picture Manufacturing Company began making films in Long Beach. In 1911, David Horsley, a producer from New Jersey, established Christie-Nestor Studios, the first movie studio established in the Hollywood community.

Ezra F. Scattergood was selected as the Bureau’s first chief electrical engineer. Scattergood led the way in the development of hydroelectric power along the route of the aqueduct and became Mulholland’s counterpart for the Power System. In 1896, West Side Lighting Company was organized by private investors to provide another source of electricity for the city of Los Angeles and fringe areas. Their first large Power Plant was built on the northwest corner of 2nd and Boylsten streets. Edison's role in life began to change from inventor and industrialist to cultural icon, a symbol of American ingenuity, and a real life Horatio Alger story.

Nearly all of the furnishings in the Edison Main House and Guest House are original to the Edison family. The Thomas Edison House is located in historic Butchertown Kentucky, a neighborhood which has been known as the center of meat production in this city for over 200 years. It was also one of the areas Thomas Alva Edison called home during the years he lived and worked in Louisville.
This where the nation’s first film production studio was located, established by Thomas Edison, inventor of the movie camera (kinetographic camera) and movie viewer (kinetoscope). Edison is revered for introducing amazing inventions that changed everyday life. He used his patents to impose control over users, whenever possible, and extracted lucrative license fees. He joined forces with other motion picture patent-holders to form the Motion Picture Patents Company (MPPC), essentially a monopoly of patent-holders. MPPC inserted clauses in sales contracts that anything created or exhibited with their patented equipment was subject to MPPC control and licensing.

Out of the West Orange laboratories came the motion picture camera, improved phonographs, sound recordings, silent and sound movies and the nickel-iron alkaline electric storage battery. The primary purpose of the project was to provide electric power for the fast-growing city of Los Angeles. California engineer John S. Eastwood was the principal designer of the system, which was initially funded and built by Henry E. Huntington's Pacific Light and Power Company (PL&P). Construction of the system's facilities started in 1911, and the first power was transmitted to Los Angeles in 1913. After SCE acquired PL&P in 1917, the system was gradually expanded to its present size, with the last powerhouse coming on line in 1987. Edison’s take-no-prisoners business tactics often get outshined by his innumerable inventions and patents.
Edison had a concrete cistern built in order to provide large amounts of potable water for domestic use in 1919. The new cistern was designed to store rainwater captured from the roof tops of Seminole Lodge. He was a well-known inventor in search of a warm escape from the cold northern winters. On his first trip to Southwest Florida he purchased more than 13 acres along the Caloosahatchee River. Edison returned to Fort Myers in 1886 with his new bride, Mina Miller Edison. For the next six decades the Edison family enjoyed their winter retreat.
The success of his electric light brought Edison to new heights of fame and wealth, as electricity spread around the world. Edison's various electric companies continued to grow until in 1889 they were brought together to form Edison General Electric. Despite the use of Edison in the company title however, Edison never controlled this company. The tremendous amount of capital needed to develop the incandescent lighting industry had necessitated the involvement of investment bankers such as J.P. When Edison General Electric merged with its leading competitor Thompson-Houston in 1892, Edison was dropped from the name, and the company became simply General Electric. He has 3 children; and a big project underway in New York to demonstrate his electric power station and distribution system for lighting … not to mention a broken heart.
Small and covered in black tarpaper, the studio got its name from the cramped police vans, or “paddywagons,” which were commonly called black Marias at the time. Crews made hundreds of short films in this simple wooden building before Edison built a better-quality studio in New York City and tore the Black Maria down in 1903. The success of the phonograph and motion pictures in the 1890s helped offset the greatest failure of Edison's career. Throughout the decade Edison worked in his laboratory and in the old iron mines of northwestern New Jersey to develop methods of mining iron ore to feed the insatiable demand of the Pennsylvania steel mills.
In 1867, while working the night shift, Edison, already the experimenter, was working with a battery when he spilled sulfuric acid onto the floor and his boss' desk on the floor below. Sixteen years later, in 1883, one of Edison's new inventions, the incandescent light bulb, was demonstrated in the largest installation to date in Louisville at the Southern Exposition. The Test Score Rating examines how students at this school performed on standardized tests compared with other schools in the state. The Test Rating was created using 2023 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) data from California Department of Education, and using 2023 California Science Test data from California Department of Education. Combined with another blaze sparked by the company’s equipment, it became the eighth-largest wildfire in state history, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Despite the more favorable courts, film makers were still under constant threat from Edison’s cartel.
In his early years, Edison felt no loyalty to any client of his and made himself available to anyone who would pay him. One of the earliest examples of his business savviness involved the development of the quadruplex, a machine capable of transmitting four telegraph messages at the same time. The under-the-table deal led to years of litigation, and eventually Western Union gained control of Edison’s device. The earliest films created at the Black Maria were short representations of everyday life — nothing like the plot-driven works of modern-day cinema. Clips of boxing matches, barbers, trapeze artists and blacksmiths were enough to create a sensation among the public and drive early interest in the world of moving pictures. Edison’s studio created the first film to ever receive a copyright in 1894.

But up to that time, nothing had been developed that was remotely practical for home use. Edison's eventual achievement was inventing not just an incandescent electric light, but also an electric lighting system that contained all the elements necessary to make the incandescent light practical, safe, and economical. After one and a half years of work, success was achieved when an incandescent lamp with a filament of carbonized sewing thread burned for thirteen and a half hours. The first public demonstration of the Edison's incandescent lighting system was in December 1879, when the Menlo Park laboratory complex was electrically lighted. Edison spent the next several years creating the electric industry. In September 1882, the first commercial power station, located on Pearl Street in lower Manhattan, went into operation providing light and power to customers in a one square mile area; the electric age had begun.

An Edison Kinetoscope, the first home motion picture projector, is also on display in the museum. During Edison's years as a telegrapher he became fascinated with improving the telegraph. Most of his early inventions were either improvements of the telegraph or similar machines, such as a fire alarm telegraph. In October 1868, about year after he left Louisville, Edison was granted his first patent for an electric vote recorder intended for use in the U.S. He was issued more than 125 patents related to the telegraph during the following years. Throughout his career he continued to turn to his experiments with the telegraph as inspiration for his inventions.

Eastman Kodak, which owned the patent on raw film stock, was a member of the Trust and thus agreed to only sell stock to other members. Hoover Dam was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression. Its main purpose was to harness the Colorado River to prevent periodic catastrophic flooding, to allocate and distribute water, and to generate hydroelectricity for the Southwest. At the time it was the world's largest project made with concrete, not to mention the largest public works project in US history.

DWP engineers viewed nuclear power as the perfect solution to a looming electricity shortage. The Corral Canyon plant would be larger than any atomic plant in existence and would have the capacity to generate about 20 percent of the power for every home, office and factory in Los Angeles, the agency predicted. One of Utah's largest coal-fired power plants — the Intermountain Power Project outside Delta — will cease operations by 2025. The plant was built in the remote part of west-central Utah, in the Sevier Desert, and is connected directly to the edge of Los Angeles by a 490 mile long high voltage DC line. The massive coal-fired power plant produces over 1,800 megawatts of power, and is supplied by coal mines in central and eastern Utah. Between 1897 and 1906 the power house was in use as Edison Electric Company Steam Plant No. 1.
The MPPC was never satisfied with simply rooting out infringement, however. They sought to ruin violators, hanging them out, so-to-speak, as examples. Since virtually all motion picture equipment was patented by MPPC, this essentially made them absolute masters of film production and exhibition.
By selling food and newspapers to train passengers, he was able to net about $50 profit each week, a substantial income at the time—especially for a 13-year-old. Mina had her choice of this estate or a townhouse in New York and wisely selected Glenmont. In the 1890s, Tom would sell the entire estate to Mina for $1, so no one could ever lay claim to his family’s home as the result of a legal suit against his inventions and manufacturing facilities. The Glenmont Estate is an imposing structure whose extreme dimensions measure approximately 125 feet long, 116 feet wide, and 54 feet high.
Pedder and several other employees were in on the siphoning of Constable’s largess. In 1884, Pedder’s scheme was uncovered, and he was forced to hand over Glenmont to Constable. The name “Glenmont” is believed to be derived from the home’s proximity to a “glen” or ravine; while at the same time, the home sits on the apex of the “mount” of the property … hence the contraction Glenmont. The estate was named by its original owners Henry and Louise Pedder. No formal documents or maps exist, officially proclaiming the property as Glenmont. Despite the relatively limited success of his later inventions (including his long struggle to perfect a magnetic ore-separator), Edison continued working into his 80s.
Like the electric light, Edison developed everything needed to have a phonograph work, including records to play, equipment to record the records, and equipment to manufacture the records and the machines. In the process of making the phonograph practical, Edison created the recording industry. The development and improvement of the phonograph was an ongoing project, continuing almost until Edison's death. Home to America’s greatest inventor, Thomas A. Edison, the Edison National Historical Park preserves Edison's laboratory and his residence, Glenmont, in nearby Llewellyn Park. Roughly half of Edison’s 1,093 patents were based on experiments in his laboratory here.
Numerous factories had been built through the years around the original laboratory, and the staff of the entire complex had grown into the thousands. To better manage operations, Edison brought all the companies he had started to make his inventions together into one corporation, Thomas A. Edison Incorporated, with Edison as president and chairman. Edison was sixty-four by this time and his role with his company and in life began to change. Edison left more of the daily operations of both the laboratory and the factories to others. The laboratory itself did less original experimental work and instead worked more on refining existing Edison products such as the phonograph. Although Edison continued to file for and receive patents for new inventions, the days of developing new products that changed lives and created industries were behind him.
Others quickly followed to Hollywood, creating a “movie colony” there. Within a year, 15 film production companies were making films in Hollywood and, by 1915, 60 percent of films were coming out of Hollywood. Hollywood had exploded from a small rural community of 5,000 in 1910 to a populaiton of 35,000 in 1920. The center of the movie business had shifted from New Jersey/New York to Hollywood.
Los Angeles Edison Electric installed the first major DC-power underground conduits system in the Southwest. This period of success was marred by the death of Edison's wife Mary in 1884. Edison's involvement in the business end of the electric industry had caused Edison to spend less time in Menlo Park. After Mary's death, Edison was there even less, living instead in New York City with his three children. A year later, while vacationing at a friends house in New England, Edison met Mina Miller and fell in love. The couple was married in February 1886 and moved to West Orange, New Jersey where Edison had purchased an estate, Glenmont, for his bride.
The government adopted their case and, in 1915, in United States vs. Motion Pictures Patents Company, convinced the court to turn against MPPC. The court ruled that the acts of MPPC constituted a conspiracy and monopoly in restraint of interstate trade, thus violating the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. Edison and his cronies had pushed filmmakers out to Hollywood, with the result that Hollywood ended up as the center of the movie business.
The lure of the theater eventually won out, and he enrolled at New York’s Neighborhood Playhouse, where he studied with Sanford Meisner and Martha Graham. Upon graduation, he looked for work as an actor while participating in the folk music scene in Greenwich Village, where he met Yarbrough at a party. This month’s selections of art to see in and around Los Angeles highlight how we tell our stories through material culture. Kwame Brathwaite’s photographs include iconic images of the Black Power and Civil Rights movements, while an exhibition of Ancient Greek, Maya, and Moche pottery conveys scenes of myth and daily life. Jackie Amézquita’s “soil paintings” and the collaborative works of the 3B Collective trace cultural and interpersonal networks from LA to Mexico and Central America.

The program has existed since at least the early 1960s when Jane Hartsook invited Peter Voulkos to teach and work in the Pottery, but was relaunched in its current iteration September 2015, when Ghada Amer was invited to be a long-term resident in our studios. That said, we are committed to keeping these spaces functional and safe during the period of fundraising and staged work, so we have and will continue to spend operational revenue on matters of operational priority and need. We are working with Blauuw kilns, an Amsterdam-based company, to construct two new custom-built, state-of-the-art kilns. Construction time for the kilns is months after receipt of deposit, so we expect to receive them sometime around April – August 2025. The funds needed to complete this portion of the project are raised and earmarked for this purpose, so the installation will be prioritized upon delivery. A few years ago, Malene Barnett, who had found success with her textile and rug collections, began feeling creatively tapped out. “I’m an artist, first and foremost,” says Barnett, who studied art at SUNY Purchase before transferring to FIT and settling into textile and surface design, which proved the basis of a 20-year career.

Ft. factory and show-room opens that eventually employs more than 100 people. 1947Brastoff opens his first ceramic plant in Los Angeles producing hand painted earthenware. The most desirable pieces are those with the full “Sascha Brastoff” signature, because they indicate that Brastoff personally designed and painted those pieces. Those signed “Sascha B” were produced either by decorators under his supervision using his designs, or by Brastoff himself.
Greenwich House Pottery has another location downtown at 16 Jones Street in Greenwich Village, where it operates a residency program and classes. The organization is currently raising $5 million to modernize its Jones Street outpost with an elevator, new kilns, an outdoor garden and a new classroom. Alex Hassilev, the singing, songwriting, guitar and banjo virtuoso who was the last surviving original member of 1960s folk trio the Limeliters, died of cancer April 21 at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. Hyperallergic is a forum for serious, playful, and radical thinking about art in the world today. Though technically proficient, the painter and Royal Academy cofounder owed a great deal of contemporary recognition to her active social networking. Recent artworks by the co-founder of Pussy Riot will be featured in a pop-up exhibition, along with an artist Q&A and performance, on May 16 in NYC.

The studios at Greenwich House Pottery – Chelsea are equipped with a handbuilding classroom, a throwing classroom, and a mixed-use studio space, three electric kilns, a slab roller, and an extruder. This studio specializes in mid-range firings, offering two clay bodies and a large selection of cone 6 glazes. We are pleased to offer the Greenwich House Pottery Residency Program, which is designed to support artists’ projects and to increase awareness around the importance of creative engagement with ceramics. Bloch explained that Greenwich House is, in fact, three historic buildings, 16 Jones Street, 46 Barrow Street, and 27 Barrow Street (headquarters), that provide 60,000 square feet under management. The organization has an additional six sites in the West Village and downtown Manhattan, and all together manages 150 full time employees and 300 part time seasonal staff and faculty. Half of the Greenwich House’s work is health and human services, including five older adult centers, and the other half is the arts and cultural classes, the nursery and summer schools.

Founded on Thanksgiving Day in 1902, Greenwich House opened its doors as a settlement house to help New York’s increasing immigrant population adjust to life in a new country. The demand for music education was so high that Greenwich House expanded its Music School to a new building.

Hassilev’s musical background was mainly in the classical field, although he knew some Russian folk songs that his parents brought over as well as some Brazilian and French songs. He said that he didn’t discover American folk music until his early 20s, when he was stationed in England after being drafted into the Army. Greenwich House also operates four senior centers, a senior health and consultation center providing mental and physical health treatment, a methadone maintenance clinic, chemical dependency program and all-girls non-competitive basketball league. Within Greenwich House Pottery is the Jane Hartsook Gallery.[13] The gallery was named in honor of Jane Hartsook, former Pottery director. Greenwich House arts programming is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
